The Next Battle: Permitless Carry

By Laura Haight
President, DWGC

Once again, the “Constitutional Carry” (that’s really just a euphemism for carrying a gun legally in public without a permit) legislation is up for a confirming vote in the state Senate.

Most SC Dems have some knowledge of this legislation, but here are the lowlights:

  • The bill has been passed in the House and moves to the Senate which will vote on its bill (S. 109) when the session reconvenes in January.
  • It abolishes the concealed weapons permit and allows anyone 18 or older to openly carry a gun without a permit, training, or a background check. Not even the previously required eye exam.
  • The bill was opposed by all state law enforcement officials.

Mom’s Demand Action is planning an Advocacy Day on Jan. 10. We’ll have more about this going forward as we hope to get a good contingent of Dem Women to join them in Columbia.

In the meantime, call or write your state Senator (home addresses and office phones are here) and ask them to vote no on the bill. Make sure to say you are their constituent. If you have a personal story related to gun violence, share it.

DWGC Outreach Chair Jen Boffey is actively engaged on this issue. If you have questions, want to get more active, or are interested in participating in Advocacy Day on Jan. 10, email her.
