Together, we can stop Permitless Carry – again

Permitless Carry – a bill that removes all guardrails for any South Carolinan wanting to walk around with a concealed, loaded firearm – is back on the docket when the state Senate returns in January.

DWGC is joining up with Moms Demand Action for an Advocacy Day on Jan. 10 at the Statehouse. The primary purpose is to convince legislators that they need to vote for gun safety and vote against this dangerous legislation. The organization’s efforts have been instrumental in stopping this same bill three times in the past, notes Dorothy Duncan, leader of the Simpsonville chapter.

But it’s back with the Senate planning consideration of S-109 during this term, a measure that would allow anyone to carry a weapon in South Carolina without a permit. The House passed this bill in 2023.

Moms Demand Action volunteers from across the state will be taking part in Advocacy Day which begins with a mustering at 8:45 a.m. at Washington Street United Methodist Church, then march together the half mile to the State House. There, we’ll all gather on the south steps for a rally and photo, and enter the building in groups to speak with legislators.

Working with Moms Demand, DWGC is gathering the information for our Upstate members who want to attend. We will organize into carpools and submit all our information to Moms Demands for t-shirts (based on availability) and, more importantly, to be added to their statewide master list. You do not have to sign up twice.

Sign up here by January 3 and we’ll coordinate rides and drivers and get you more information on where to meet us when you get to Columbia.

ACLU WILL BE ADVOCATING TOO

The ACLU will also be in Columbia on the 10th. They’re joining with SC United for Justice and Equality  for a day-long event focusing on school library censorship, anti-trans laws, and reproductive freedom. The SC United web site includes a list of legislation that especially targets LGBTQ and trans individuals.
