SUMMARY:The ERA: So Close After Coming So Far
DESCRIPTION:The Equal Rights Amendment has been around for longer than most of us think\, and is closer to being enshrined in the Constitution than most of us know. We are currently just four congressional signatures away from a vote that many advocates believe would end with the amendment’s approval this year. \nIn a year when you and I are working for the election of Kamala Harris as this country’s first female President\, it is incongruous that the United States has yet to ratify Equal Rights Amendment. It’s more than a badge. Especially when we consider some of the legislative action on reproductive rights\, health care\, and more that’s occurred in the past few years. How would that play out once women’s rights are finally enshrined in the Constitution? \nThe League of Women Voters of Greenville County\, joined by Furman University\, and the American Association of University Women\, are sponsoring a September 12 program that will examine the history of the ERA’s 100-year journey\, the pathway and process to approval\, and what we can do to help. \nRegister to attend either in person or remotely here https://lwvgreenville.wufoo.com/forms/x12zhurb0wuh8do/

DESCRIPTION:September 21st is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day\, marking the day this year that a black woman finally attains the same pay a white man made in 2021. Almost 10 months longer. At 63 cents on the dollar\, Black working women are not even the most affected by this disparity. That distinction goes to Latinas\, who make 55 cents on the dollar. \nOn September 20\, the LWV of Greenville County will draw attention to this injustice with a virtual conversation: Black Women’s Equal Pay Day: The Issue.
