SUMMARY:Women's March on Washington- South Carolina: Pledge of Liberation & Healthcare Rally
DESCRIPTION:On January 21\, 2017\, five million of us came together to raise our voices in unity at Women’s Marches around the globe. That was just the beginning. We have all spent the past 100 days proving the power of our collective voice\, from the #NoBanNoWall actions at airports around the country to A Day Without a Woman\, the Tax March\, the Science March\, People’s Climate March and going #BeyondTheMoment on May Day. \nThat was the first 100 days. Today\, we recommit ourselves to resistance work—and to each other. We cannot pledge our allegiance to an administration that actively oppresses and harms us. With this letter\, we pledge our allegiance to the collective liberation of all our communities. \nTo sign the Pledge of Liberation\, use this link:\nhttps://actionnetwork.org/petitions/womens-march-pledge-of-liberation \nOn May 4th\, our congress passed a bill that will severely impact millions of citizens and their healthcare and our President signed an executive order that would make religous based discrimination against marginalized communities “lawful”. \nFor the reasons listed above\, we are holding a rally at the South Carolina State House Monday\, May 8th in solidarity with our fellow #ReSISTERSthroughout the Palmetto State and around the country. Please join us!\n(More updates to come) \nWith Peace & Love\n-Mika

SUMMARY:Pleasant Valley Connection\, Incorporated Scholarship Golf Tournament
DESCRIPTION:*Not an official GCDP Event* \nDear Supporter\, \nWe invite you to join our efforts at Pleasant Valley Connection\, Inc. in making a lasting difference in the lives of families living in Pleasant Valley and surrounding communities in Greenville County.  The Greater Pleasant Valley Community\, located off of Old Augusta Road\, is recognized by the City of Greenville as a Special Emphasis Neighborhood because of the large number of residents living in poverty and the alarmingly low literacy rate in the area.  In addition\, many of the children in the community live in single-parent homes.  \nAs a result of the hardworking efforts of a multi-agency planning committee\, the Pleasant Valley Connection\, Inc. opened its doors in 2003 to serve the community.  Since its inception\, the center’s programs have been designed to combat social and educational issues hindering the progress of residents.  These programs include an Early Childhood Development Preschool\, an After-School Tutorial Center\, a Summer Enrichment Day Camp\, a Teen Center\, and a Senior Citizen Program. \nOn Friday\, April 21\, 2017 Pleasant Valley Connection\, Incorporated will host the “Pleasant Valley Connection\, Incorporated Scholarship Golf Tournament.” This event will be held at the Bonnie Brae Golf Club located at 1116 Ashmore Bridge Road\, Greenville\, South Carolina. The Golf tournament will begin at 1:00 pm. The cost is $75.00 per person. Also\, $100 sponsorship opportunities are available for all holes. This event will be a 2 Man Captain’s Choice\, with a hole in one prize of $7\,500. April 15\, 2017 is the deadline for sponsorship opportunities. \nWe are excited about this venture and look forward to a successful event! The funds raised from this event will be used to supplement program costs to ensure our participants have a better future\, thus making our community stronger and healthier. \nWe sincerely thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Scholarship Golf Tournament. \nCordially\, \nDexter L. Reaves\,\nExecutive Director\n(864)977-1229

SUMMARY:SC Progressive Network Spring Conference
DESCRIPTION:*Not an official GCDP event\, Hosted by SC Progressive Network* \nOur spring conference this year is going to focus on the distinction the Network makes between movement building and electoral work. The recent election has both Democrats and Republicans trying to redefine and rejuvenate their parties. It is an opportunity for a deeper discussion about the system we’re operating under and the crippling effects of money and gerrymandering on our democracy. We’ll take a deep dive into the fatal flaws of our political system and why the Network considers elections secondary to building a movement to make and sustain progressive change.  The conference will be followed by social time and dinner. Stay tuned for more details.

SUMMARY:Safe & Free? Civil Liberties & the Fight for National Security
DESCRIPTION:*Not an official GCDP event\, Hosted by The Riley Institute at Furman* \nA two-day symposium featuring ten prominent Furman alumni\n7:00 p.m. April 10 & 11\, 2017\nMcAlister Auditorium\nFurman University \nFree and open to the public. No tickets required. \nPresented by Furman University’s Riley Institute and Department of Politics and International Affairs with support from J. Kelly Sisk Fund and Mayville Fund. \nTen Furman alumni spanning five decades of the Furman experience share their expertise during this two-day symposium. These distinguished alumni will share their knowledge and experiences not only during the evening events\, which are free and open to the public\, but also throughout their days on campus–in classes\, over meals with students and faculty\, and in other small group settings. \nOn April 10\, “Safe and Free? Civil Liberties and the Fight for National Security” will examine the current national security environment and how we address the challenges we face in an increasingly complex world. How do military strategists\, intelligence agencies\, diplomats\, scientists and technology specialists respond to threats nimbly while working within the existing constructs and the rule of law? \nOn April 11\, speakers will weigh the value of government surveillance against the importance of Americans’ civil liberties. Edward Snowden’s leaks that shone a spotlight on questionable government surveillance practices are viewed as criminal by some and patriotic by others. Who gets to decide what is revealed and when? We want the government to be able to provide for our safety\, but how willing are we to sacrifice personal freedoms for a greater sense of security? \nJoin us April 10th and 11th for two nights of powerful and insightful presentations and discussions on these critical issues. Both sessions will be moderated by tenth Furman president and historian David Shi\, Furman class of 1973. \nTo view all biographies\, click here. \nTo read an article from Furman News about Maj. Gen. SUMMARY:Strength in Unity Conference
DESCRIPTION:*GCDP Community Partner Event* \nA fierce resistance is sweeping the nation in response to Donald Trump’s election to the presidency. People are waking up to the realization that politics DOES\, in fact\, matter\, that direct citizen action is required — and the time to act is NOW! \nThis growing grassroots resistance is notable for its diversity and extremely wide foundation. Pre-existing progressive groups have seen their memberships expand\, and new groups are being formed at a rapid pace. \nHere in the Upstate of South Carolina\, the resistance is also notable for its lack of cohesion and inter-group communication. Almost every day we hear about a new meeting\, march\, protest\, potluck or other event created by a progressive organization. \nEvery other day we hear a newly-minted activist ask\, “What can I do? How can I help? Where can I find out about everything that’s going on?” \nThe leadership of Indivisible groups in the Greenville / Spartanburg corridor propose a meeting of the minds — at a meeting of any and all progressive political action groups. \nWe’re calling it “Strength In Unity” because we will all be more effective when we stand together. Let’s focus our efforts and REALLY make a difference! Join us and let’s build Strength In Unity. \nWho this is for:\n– the leadership teams of any/all progressive political action organizations. (See the list below.)\n– any concerned citizen ready\, willing and able to step up and become a leader. \nWhat we hope to accomplish:\n– to create a friendly “meet and greet” event where group leaders and members can connect and share contact information;\n– to identify and recognize all progressive groups in the area (or as many as we can) for the purposes of creating a comprehensive online directory and calendar of events;\n– to improve inter-group communication and foster an atmosphere of cooperation among all groups\, so that we can support one other in our respective missions; and\,\n– to discuss how we can avoid duplication of effort and minimize scheduling conflicts moving forward. \nParticipating groups (so far): \n– #Resist Greenville\n– ACLU of South Carolina\n– Black Lives Matter Greenville\n– The Enlightenment Project\n– From the Ground Up\n– Green Party of Greenville\n– Indivisible Clemson\n– Indivisible GSP (District 4)\n– Indivisible Greenville\n– Just Democrats\n– Resist45\n– Results\n– Upstate Coalition for Equality\n– Upstate Peace Network \nPlease RSVP so we can plan accordingly. \nThe event is free to all attendees\, but we will be asking for donations to help cover the costs incurred by the hosting venue.

SUMMARY:IMPACT: Social Security & Medicaid
DESCRIPTION:*Not an official GCDP event\, Hosted by the Pickens County Democratic Party* \nJoin the PCDP for a night of personal stories and discussion about Social Security & Medicaid – led by one of our own – Richard Byrd. \nLOCATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY! \n6:00-6:30 – Meet & Greet\, Ordering Food\n6:30 – Presentation Begins \nAbout Richard— \n“From the Maine Senator Angus King & columnist Charlie Pierce; this is a story about People\, Not Ideology. I am a retired public school teacher (30 years) at Easley Junior High\, Walhalla High\, & Pendleton High School. I coached football\, basketball\, track\, and started cross country programs at WHS & PHS. My last four women’s track teams were county & conference champions and had not lost a meet in 3 years. I also was a certified SC High School League basketball official for 9 years. Other school duties over the years included prom\, science fair\, and School Improvement Council. Perhaps my most important extracurricular activity occurred at PHS with involvement in the World Class Partnership Exchange Program with the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway\, Scotland which paved the way for my first trip abroad. My father\, a Korean War Vet died in 1998 and a few years after that\, my Mom began her battle with colon cancer that eventually took her life in 2013. This led to my experiences with tonight’s topic that certainly is not unique for those of us who have or will have aging parents.”

SUMMARY:The Red Rally for International Women's Day
DESCRIPTION:*Not an official GCDP event. Event hosted by Birds Fly South Ale Project.* \n*This is a non-partisan event. Red is the color designated by the Women’s March on Washington national campaign as a symbol of unity and action. \nJoin us on International Women’s Day to honor and explore the lives of women in our Upstate community. Groups and individuals from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences have been invited to collaborate and participate in this event. \nThe evening will include working with the Homeless Period Project to assemble packs for women in need\, using our voices as we are led in song by local female musicians\, and an open mic where women will share personal stories from girl and womanhood in our often divided and oppressive society. \nWe encourage you to wear red on March 8th in solidarity with women around the world. Red is a color signifying revolutionary spirit and sacrifice. It is both positive and negative\, from deep love to deep loss. \nBirds Fly South Ale Project stands by our vision and promise to Love Thy Neighbor. Please stand with us as we engage\, respect\, listen to\, and honor the incredible women in our community. \nHomeless Period Project:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/Homelessperiodprojectgreenville/

SUMMARY:Tell Them Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:*Not an official GCDP event* \nFrom Deb Morrow: \nTho it was a victory to have Lindsey Graham hold a town hall\, which he admitted was partly in response to our deluge of visits to his offices\, his comments made clear that we can’t let up now!!!! \n#1 Trump’s off-the-wall accusation that Obama illegally wire-tapped him must be treated w/the outrage it deserves … Repubs are poised to turn this into the next Benghazi while ignoring all the red flags about trump \n#2 To paraphrase\, Graham said “Y’all are just sore losers” – that we’re just upset Hillary didn’t win. Many of us who are upset voted for Hillary\, but many did not!!!! It’s about the horrible things Trump is doing and saying. \nIf some ppl carry signs indicating they’re NOT Clinton fans\, please don’t criticize or blame them now for trump’s win – IT’S A GOOD POINT TO MAKE that everyone’s welcome – even trump voters w/buyer’s remorse must unite and condemn him now.  \n(Graham himself said he voted for independent Evan McMullin for Pres!) \nOur Repub legislators make every excuse not to listen to us & condemn Trump’s erratic personality\, bad policies\, ignorance\, terrible cabinet picks\, secret finances/conflicts of interest and ties to Russia –  \nFirst we’re supposedly paid agitators from out of state\, then we’re sore losers… or just wanted a woman Pres because many women are protesting.  \nIt’s powerful to show our zip codes … AND if we have some Bernie\, Stein\, Cruz etc or even former Trump fans all the better – so peace please\, everybody! We will never achieve the goal that’s good for America – stopping trump – unless we unite. \nIF YOU WANT TO RIDE TOGETHER OR CARAVAN PLEASE CALL ME AT 864-764-0364. And it’s fun to eat together afterwards\, so if you’re on a tight schedule it’s better to ride with others who won’t want to hang around.  \nThis isn’t everybody’s choice of activism\, but if you’re on the fence it’s fun (good company!) pretty easy (nice little courtyard and bookstore/cafe!) and it produces results & news coverage … momentum for more trump opposition.  \nHope to see you tomorrow – bring a friend this time!!! and if anyone can’t go on Tuesdays and would like to organize a different day\, that’d be awesome. Please continue to call the office. Heartfelt thanks to all\, whether coming faithfully every week\, once in a while\, go a different day\, or make phone calls.
