February Meeting

Lobbyist takes a dive into education legislation

State legislators have their eyes on education. And in many cases, not in a good way. Janelle Rivers, the League of Women Voters of South Carolina’s education advocacy specialist/lobbyist, will be our guest speaker on February 13. Dr. Rivers will discuss both the good and bad bills on the docket, what their chances may be, and what we can do.

Dr. Rivers, Lynn Teague, and Teresa Arnold make up the League’s volunteer lobbyist corps, which works tirelessly throughout the session to fight – against the odds – for good governance and progressive, productive public policy.

Dr. Rivers is a retired educator and one of three lobbyists for the League of Women Voters of SC. She believes in working for good government, supporting public education, promoting fair elections, informing voters, and eliminating corruption. A South Carolina native who grew up in Chesterfield County, she began teaching in the public schools of Charleston County and later served as an administrator overseeing assessment, accountability, evaluation, and research activities at the South Carolina Department of Education and in Richland County and Lexington County. She holds degrees from Columbia College, Boston University, and the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Rivers will be joining us from Columbia via Zoom. So this meeting will be a hybrid. If you cannot attend lunch, you can still participate virtually.

On the Menu

This month’s lunch is being catered by the Kroc Center. We’ll be serving a pasta bar with two types of pasta, served with marinara and alfredo sauces. Also a mixed green salad, sliced chicken, garlic bread, and a special Valentine’s Day dessert. Also assorted petit fours.

We would like to expand on the type of food, the quality of the food and who we use for our catering needs. In keeping with our initiatives, it is our preference to give our business to women-owned  or minority-owned caterers. If there is an organization you would like to support, please share their contact information with me.

To ensure we have accurate counts for lunch and use our budget appropriately, we will be closing reservations at noon the Wednesday prior to the meeting. You will be able to signup after the lunch reservations close to attend the meeting without eating.

I hope you enjoy the meeting! Let Meetings and Events chair Linda Derector know of any suggestions you might have!
