Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebrations

Several events are scheduled throughout the Upstate to celebrate Juneteenth – now a national holiday!


Feeding the Less Fortunate is a community event, Friday June 18 at 6 p.m. More information to come.


A Celebration of Black Excellence will be held at the Peace Center’s TD Amphitheater on Saturday, June 19 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Join the Young Democrats of Greenville County at this Juneteenth event organized by 1st Vice Chair Derrick Quarles. The YDGC will have a table under a blue tent where they’ll be registering voters and recruiting new young Dems amidst the live entertainment, food, and music. You don’t want to miss this! Lots will be going on at this event which will be “Celebrating and paying homage to our ancestral roots – Black art, Black entertainment, and Black Businesses.”


A community cookout to celebrate Juneteenth is planned by the Urban League of the Upstate. The event will be at Long Branch Baptist Church, 28 Bolt St., Greenville, on Saturday June 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Food, music, and family fun will be provided.

Sustaining Way has a CommUNITY celebration with food, drinks, vendors, activities for kids, dancing, and a Father’s Day recognition. The event, at the Phillis Wheatley Community Center, 40 John McCarroll Way, Greenville, runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and is free.


Ready to rally? There will be a celebratory parade down Main Street at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 20th. Gather at the Peace Center’s plaza.


Sunday night, there’s a “Say What?” open mic poetry celebration at Coffee Underground, 1 Coffee St., Greenville, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Hosted by Moody Black, a spoken word poet, comedian and artist, the evening will feature poetry games, funs, and a full night of open mic slots for local poets celebrating Black excellence. Doors open at 7 p.m. and there is a $10 cover charge.
