Dems mourn the loss of Edith Chou

Edith Chou, a stalwart Greenville Democrat, advocate for education, women’s rights and racial equality, and a lifetime member of Democratic Women, has passed away at the age of 94.

In August 2023, DWGC approved Lifetime Membership for Edith. Here’s what we wrote at that time.

Edith has been a member of Democratic Women almost since its inception in 1967.

As a young woman, Edith aligned with the Democratic Party in part because of its efforts to act on behalf of the underserved — something she experienced both in her youth at home, and in her early years working in the family court system.

Edith received two masters degrees from Furman University, and taught third grade in the Greenville County School District for almost 40 years.

In addition to Democratic Women, Edith has been an active member of the Greenville League of Women Voters, The Greenville NAACP, and the ACLU. She has supported many organizations working toward women’s rights and equal rights including Planned Parenthood, the National Organization of Women, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the ACLU.

Edith has passionately devoted her efforts towards helping state Democrats get elected to local, statewide and federal office. And served to protect the vote for over 40 years as a poll worker in Greenville county.

She has been a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention and has for decades been a delegate to every state Democratic Convention since 1980.

When Linda Hardman interviewed her a few years ago, she said she felt fortunate to have been a part of the Democratic Party and to have been a witness to the contributions the Party has made towards justice, equity, and a better quality of life for her fellow South Carolinians.

And we feel fortunate to have Edith on our team and to stand as an example of what commitment to the betterment of your community looks like.

Edith, Thank you!
